MYTHS ABOUT PETA - DEBUNKED

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PETA is the world's most unfairly hated organizations today.
Unfortunately, there are hundreds of myths about PETA, none of which true.
If you want to hate PETA, fine. But hate them for a reason.

Below is a list of almost all myths about PETA that I have debunked.
NOTE: If you have a myth that is not below, please email it to me at EverybodyScanNow (at) gmail (dot) com and I will investigate it.

(not listed in any particular order)

MYTH NUMBER ONE:
PETA is against pets.
-
This is by far one of the most spread myths.
Actually, the debunking has already been done by PETA itself. If you'll look at the below screenshot from this PETA page:
Contrary to myth, PETA does not want to confiscate animals who are well cared for and "set them free." What we want is for the population of dogs and cats to be reduced through spaying and neutering and for people to adopt animals (preferably two so that they can keep each other company when their human companions aren't home) from pounds or shelters—never from pet shops or breeders—thereby reducing suffering in the world.

PETA has nothing against pets at all, just abuse of them and overpopulation.
The myth might have started from a misinterpretation of this paragraph from the same above page:
We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals' best interests if the institution of "pet keeping"—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as "pets"—never existed. The international pastime of domesticating animals has created an overpopulation crisis; as a result, millions of unwanted animals are destroyed every year as "surplus." This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. Their lives are restricted to human homes where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to.

That simply means that PETA wishes that people would treat animals better and spay/neuter them to reduce overpopulation and abuse. The misinterpretation probably came from the idea that PETA wishes that the idea of "Pets" never existed, thus eliminating suffering. This does not mean that PETA is against pets - if people didn't abuse or neglect them, PETA wouldn't care.

MYTH NUMBER TWO:
PETA's vice-president is a hypocrite because she uses insulin, a medication derived from animal testing.
-
PETA's vice-president is NOT a hypocrite because:
  1. Insulin has already been found, and the test animals have already suffered, so there's no point boycotting it now.
  2. She needs it to live, and she needs her life to fight for the rights of animals. What would her ghost do? Rattle chains at KFC until they die of laughter?
  3. She would have probably fought against insulin too - if PETA had been around when it existed. Actually, maybe even if she had BEEN ALIVE. Animal testing of insulin began back in 1889. It had only hit the markets sometime shortly after 1921, as you can see in this Wikipedia article. It's 2006 now - PETA was founded in 1980 - nope, not yet. Let's see - she looks something like 60? Let's call her 80. Hell, let's call her 100 even! Animals started being tested on in 1889, right? She'd have to be 117 years old to have began fighting it. Sorry. Not yet.

MYTH NUMBER THREE:
PETA had thrown at least 80 animals bodies that they had euthanized into a dumpster.
-
Please see this Wikipedia article quote:
PETA condemned the dumping as against their policy, and suspended one of the employees involved for 90 days. Police charged the two employees with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of dead animals. In October, these charges were dropped, and replaced with 42 combined counts of animal cruelty, and 3 counts of "obtaining property under false pretense". A trial date was set for August 16, 2006.
As you can see, this was against their policy. "Obtaining property under false pretense." See that part?

MYTH NUMBER FOUR:
PETA's ads are offensive.
-
Okay, while this may not fit into the myths category, it simply is wrong. Many people state that animals cannot feel pain. Though PETA may hate me for saying this, step on a dogs paw. It yelps in - guess what? - PAIN. Kick a chicken. It flies away because it feels - three guesses - PAIN. Animals can feel pain just like you or I can, or the Jews did in the Holocaust:
Holocaust On Your Plate
Holocaust On Your Plate
Holocaust On Your Plate
PETA's "Holocaust On Your Plate" is a true and eye-catching ad. There is no difference. Both feel the pain, both hate it. Though it may bring back painful memories, think of the pain animals suffer every day.

MYTH NUMBER FIVE:
PETA is against animal testing - the only way to find new vaccines and medicines.
-
Nope.
-
The most effective way to find new vaccines and medicines?
-
Try again.
-
Um... a really good-
-
Stop right there.
That's right, contrary to popular belief, there are alternatives to cruel animal testing. In fact, there are not one, not two, but THREE alternatives to animal testing. Does that register? No. Animal. Testing. Needed. None! I'll repeat it again for the non-believers: ANIMAL TESTING IS OUTDATED.

MYTH NUMBER SIX:
PETA supports the ALF, a violent animal group.
-
Again, this doesn't quite fit in myths. PETA are tuned-down animal extremists. The ALF is... well... just watch this.
The ALF friggin RULES! Yes, PETA supports them. Who cares? The ALF does what PETA cannot to stay legal. The ALF... just... rules! *cough* Sorry. Anyway, they do violent things, yes. But they never hurt people. If you think what the ALF does is wrong, sick, or some other synonym, please click HERE.

MYTH NUMBER SEVEN:
PETA keeps dead animals in a freezer.
-
What the....?
I have no idea how this myth started, except I hear it everywhere. Um... yeah, they have a huge freezer. They bury the animals they euthanized. They don't... um... damn, this myth's weird. Next.

MYTH NUMBER EIGHT:
PETA forces you to become a vegetarian.
-
I think this picture explains my opinion on this very nicely:
STOP EATING MEAT OR DIE!
